PTFE thread seal tape is the default thread sealant for cold water plumbing in residential, commercial, irrigation and rainwater systems. This article covers the right tape for each cold water application, the difference between cold water and hot water service, and limitations such as exposure to UV and freezing.
Standard White Tape Is the Default
For cold water lines, the de-facto standard is a 12mm × 10m × 0.075mm white PTFE tape at 0.3-0.4 g/cm³ density. This is the SKU sold in virtually every hardware store worldwide and the one most plumbing technicians use by default. It is adequate for cold water service at any pressure found in residential and commercial plumbing (typically 1-6 bar) and at any temperature from 0°C to about 40°C.
Cold Water Compatibility with Pipe Materials
PTFE tape is fully compatible with copper, PEX, CPVC, PVC, galvanised steel, stainless steel and brass cold water lines. For plastic threads (PEX, CPVC, PVC threaded fittings), the tape acts as both sealant and thread lubricant, allowing the joint to be tightened to the right torque without cracking the fitting. For metal-to-metal joints, the tape fills the helical voids between threads and creates a pressure-tight seal under joint make-up.
For PE (polyethylene) and HDPE piping, which uses compression fittings rather than tapered threads, PTFE tape is not required and may interfere with the compression seal. Use only on threaded fittings, not on compression or push-fit connections.
Outdoor Cold Water and UV Exposure
PTFE tape is not UV-resistant. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will degrade the surface of the tape and may cause cracking or discolouration. For outdoor cold water lines (garden taps, irrigation risers, outdoor pool equipment), wrap the joint with a UV-resistant tape or shrink sleeve after the PTFE tape is applied. Alternatively, use a UV-resistant thread sealant paste on top of the PTFE tape.
For irrigation systems, both drip irrigation and sprinkler systems, PTFE tape is the standard thread sealant on all plastic threaded fittings. Use a 12mm tape (not 19mm) on the smaller 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch irrigation fittings, and wrap 3-4 turns. For larger 1 inch and 2 inch irrigation fittings, use a 19mm tape.
Cold Water in Freezing Climates
In freezing climates, the failure mode for cold water lines is not the tape but the pipe itself: water inside the pipe freezes, expands and cracks the pipe or fitting. PTFE tape will not prevent this. For frost protection, the pipe must be insulated, heated, or drained before winter. In unheated outdoor installations (cabins, barns, irrigation systems), the standard practice is to install a drain valve at the low point of the system and to blow out the lines with compressed air before the first frost.
If a fitting has been subjected to freezing and has cracked, the joint must be re-made with new PTFE tape. Old tape that has been frozen may have lost its elasticity and will not seal reliably even if the fitting is not visibly damaged.
Cold Water Quality and Potable Water
For cold water lines that carry drinking water, the standard white plumber tape is acceptable for residential use in most markets. Where local code requires NSF/ANSI 61, WRAS or a similar drinking water certification, a pink food-grade tape is the safer choice. Pink tape is manufactured from virgin PTFE resin with no dye or recycled content that could leach into the water.
For rainwater harvesting systems, greywater recycling and any non-potable cold water system, standard white plumber tape is acceptable. The certification requirement applies only to water that humans may drink or that comes into contact with food preparation surfaces.
FAQ
Can I use white plumber tape on cold water lines?
Yes. White plumber tape is the standard sealant for residential and commercial cold water plumbing. It is rated for the full pressure and temperature range of any cold water system.
Does PTFE tape work on PEX cold water lines?
Yes. Use PTFE tape on all PEX threaded fittings (manifolds, valves, threaded adapters). Do not use tape on PEX crimp or push-fit connections; those fittings have their own sealing mechanism.
Is PTFE tape safe for drinking water?
Standard white plumber tape is safe for residential drinking water in most markets. For NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS certified installations, a pink food-grade tape is the safer choice. The certification applies to water intended for human consumption.
How many turns of tape for a 1/2 inch cold water joint?
3-4 turns of 12mm wide standard tape. For a 3/4 inch joint, also 3-4 turns. For a 1 inch joint, use 19mm wide tape and 3-4 turns. The exact number is less important than making sure the threads are fully covered and the tape is wrapped in the direction of joint tightening.
