Generic white plumber tape is usually plain PTFE without the brand premium, and the two are interchangeable for nearly every plumbing and gas application.

A second misconception is that 'more turns of tape is always better.' Wrapping too much tape actually works against you: extra tape bunches up under the joint, can crack when compressed, and may push the male thread out of alignment. The right number of turns is 3-4 for 12mm tape at 0.075mm thickness on new threads, or 2-3 turns of thicker 0.1mm high-density tape. The joint should be tightened firmly but not over-tightened.

A third misconception is that PTFE tape can be used on every threaded connection. A 0.4 g/cm³ virgin tape and a 0.4 g/cm³ recycled tape will look different on the spool even if the technical specification is the same.

Three quick quality checks at the sample stage: (1) unwind a full roll and look for consistent colour, smooth wind, no soft spots and no kinks; (2) pull a 50cm strip and check the tensile strength by hand (a good tape resists tearing, a poor tape tears easily); (3) measure the density by weighing a known length on a precision scale (a 12mm × 10m roll should weigh about 2.6g for 0.35 g/cm³ density, or 3.0g for 0.4 g/cm³, etc.). For OEM private label programs, request a factory batch sample from the actual production run, not a hand-picked marketing sample.

For buyers who need a documented quality system, ask the factory for its test report covering density, thickness, tensile strength and elongation. Most reputable Chinese factories can issue a per-batch test certificate at no extra cost. For markets with mandatory third-party certification (SASO in Saudi Arabia, SABER in UAE, NSF/ANSI 61 in the United States for potable water), the importer is responsible for the registration and certificate, but the factory can provide supporting documentation.
